Try thinking multiple applications when you consider obtaining another appliance, tool or piece of equipment for yourself. A skidsteer is a wonderful piece of equipment because it has so many different applications for helping with outdoor work. A garden tractor with attachment could be viewed in much the same way.

What about other items around the house? Could we identify multiple applications for some of these as well? Sure, and I'd like to give you an example - the dishwasher.

My friends have told me with mild astonishment, "You put more things in the dishwasher!" It's true. I believe the dishwasher should wash more than just dishes. After all, it washes utensils, glasses and flatware, and those items are not dishes. So, why not other things? Using the dishwasher, I've washed items such as:

  • ice cube trays
  • small plastic containers
  • parts that needed cleaning
  • ball caps
  • washable filter media

If you can see your way clear to multiple applications for your dishwasher, then you're making better use of that asset, and that can be a nice addition to your approach to frugal living and self reliance.

A word of caution is in order. Make certain whatever you're washing can handle the environment inside the dishwasher. Remember there is hot water spray, rotating arms, and wire racks for dishes. All of these need to be taken into consideration. Many plastic commercial food product containers will melt or deform, even with the heat turned off. Fragile things can easily break. Large items will interfere with rotating arms.

Make certain that whatever you're cleaning can be handled by the internals of your dishwasher. Anything that will release small parts or debris like gravel is not a good candidate for the dishwasher since these will likely be a challenge for the food grinder and can get lodged in the pump impeller.

And, I feel compelled to mention that things covered in grease and grime won't be welcome in the kitchen dishwasher, and will likely leave you with much more than just "ring around the collar." Get yourself an old used dishwasher and install it in your basement or shop for those really messy jobs.
