Multi-position ladders have accessories to make them more efficient for users. Among of these accessories is a ladder jack. This is usually found in industries like construction and among the DIY persons who are searching for an easier and a more convenient way to do tasks.

The Basics

A ladder jack is triangular in shape. One side of the triangle has two brackets that bind between two ladder rungs. Once the ladder has been set up, the top of the triangle must be close to horizontal and must extend past the limiting line of the triangle created by the jack. It is also equipped with a bracket that is use for handling scaffolding or other platforms.

Application

Jacks are most commonly used for scaffolding between two ladders. This is done by having two ladders set-up at the same angle on the same surface. The scaffolding then, is place on top of two ladder jacks.

Using a Ladder Jack


  • This type of ladder accessory is so easy to use
  • After the ladder set-up, put the ladder jack on top of two rungs of the ladder
  • The jack should be nested carefully, so that its top is perpendicular to gravitational pull; can also be placed horizontally to the wall on which the ladder is positioned
  • Check if the jack is not loose, for you can place scaffolding or any tool you want in this case
  • Adjustment- most of these tools can be adjusted to adapt to different sizes of ladders. It is important to know and read the user's guide before doing the necessary adjustments. This is to avoid a dysfunctional jack, especially when it is loaded.
  • Advantages- because of portability and effectiveness, these jacks are commonly used. They are affordable and can be interchanged effortlessly, in contrast to more costly or complicated types of scaffolding. Unfortunately, this portability has its disadvantage for it can only be use with light loads.

Tips in using a ladder jack:

  • Proper set-up
    • put the ladders against the building considering their specifications
    • the scaffolding platform must extend one foot beyond the jack on each side, so the ladders must be separated
    • Place the jack at the desired height of the first ladder. Same goes with the other jack on the second ladder
    • when bringing the scaffolding plank up, it must be one end at a time
    • someone must assist you in holding one end of the plank while you carry the other end up the ladder
  • Safety tips
    • It is recommended that safety is observed to avoid injuries. Wear safety equipment to protect yourself
    • Position the ladders only on intact and solid ground
    • Make sure the scaffolding is level or equal before the start of work
    • Make sure that the ladder jack and scaffolding are safely set-up
    • Never put too much weight on the scaffolding
    • Read and follow the manufacturer's manual safety guidelines
